Your guide will meet you at your hotel in Kangerlussuaq in a luxury vehicle to begin your expedition. After a brief safety briefing and an overview of the route ahead, you’ll set off into the untouched interior.

Overland Journey to the Ice Sheet

The drive begins with a steady climb through the wide-open Arctic tundra. The landscape is unlike anything you’ve seen, with gentle tundra covered in soft moss under an open sky. Winding rivers weave through old glacial valleys, carving paths through the landscape. As you travel further inland, the road narrows, and the terrain becomes wilder. Your private guide can pull over so you can admire the views, search for wildlife, or take some unique photos.

Along the way, your guide will share insights into the region’s natural history and explain how this road was originally built by the U.S. military during the Cold War to access remote radar stations. You’ll pass moraine fields and glacial outwash plains—stark reminders of the ice’s powerful presence, even before you reach its edge.

At the end of the road, you’ll arrive at Point 660, the gateway to the Greenland Ice Sheet. From here, you’ll begin a guided walk across the terminal moraine and onto the ice itself. Your guide will supply crampons or microspikes to help you walk safely on the frozen surface. The hike is moderate and usually takes about 30–45 minutes each way, with breaks to rest, take photos, and learn about the ever-changing ice landscape.

Once you reach the top of the ice ridge, you’ll step onto the Ice Sheet—a vast, blindingly white world of ancient snow compressed into solid blue ice. The silence is incredible, broken only by the crunch of your boots or the distant sound of melting streams. You’ll have time to explore surface features like meltwater pools and crevasses, take in the sheer scale of your surroundings, and simply stand in awe of one of the most extreme environments on the planet.

Lake Ferguson and Sondrestrom Station Area

After stepping off the Ice Sheet, you’ll head toward the scenic Lake Ferguson area, just a short drive from Kangerlussuaq. Nestled among rolling hills and surrounded by Arctic scrubland, the lake offers a calm contrast to the stark ice you visited earlier. It’s a peaceful place to take in the landscape, spot birdlife, and enjoy the stillness of inland Greenland.

Nearby, your guide will take you past the remains of the Sondrestrom Upper Atmospheric Research Station, once one of the most important ionospheric research facilities in the Arctic. Though the station is no longer active, the site carries echoes of its Cold War-era past, when scientists and military personnel lived and worked in isolation, studying auroras and radio signals from deep within the Arctic Circle. As you explore the lakeshore and hear stories of the station’s history, you’ll get a feel for what it was like to live and conduct research in this extreme environment.

Return Drive to Kangerlussuaq

Your private guide will begin the return journey back across the tundra. The light shifts throughout the day, casting new colors across the landscape, and your guide will choose a few scenic stops along the way for photographs or wildlife spotting. It’s not uncommon to see musk oxen grazing in the distance or Arctic hares darting across the road.

As the vehicle rolls back toward Kangerlussuaq, you’ll have time to reflect on the surreal experience of walking on the Ice Sheet and exploring one of Earth’s most remote corners.
